AAA2024 presents A Baybayin Workshop with Jas Sabrine

Urban Dream Brokerage
115 Taranaki Street, Wellington (upstairs)
Monday 22 April, 12-3pm

Baybayin is one of the indigenous pre-hispanic scripts of the Philippines, which was primarily used in the Tagalog language. It was part of the everyday life of the Filipino, until colonisation affected our writing systems. Today we are seeing a resurgence in Baybayin from artists of differing mediums, as well as government documentation.

In this Baybayin workshop Jas Sabrine guided us through a brief history of Baybayin, and how to write in one of the indigenous pre-hispanic Filipino writing systems. Afternoon tea was provided courtesy of Don Ramon's BBQ.

Limited capacity.

FREE and all welcome, however Filipino Tauiwi of all ages were a priority audience for this event, and are encouraged to attend. Please take this in consideration when registering.

Jas Sabrine (they/them/siya) is a Filipino, tangata Tiriti visual artist based in Te Whanganui-a-tara. whose work engages with decolonisation and indigenisation practices within the fine art space. Driven by a deep love for their culture, their art is dedicated to reclaiming cultural identity as a diaspora, self-determination, and representation. Jas’ art and perspective is largely informed by their experience of immigrating to Aotearoa, from the Philippines. They are currently in their final year of studying Fine Arts with Honours at Massey University.
