Andy Chia is a leading flutist/wind player, talented artist, renowned producer, and innovative artistic director, as well as a husband and father of three. He has dedicated his career to exploring the intersection of humans, nature, and technology, seeking a harmonious, unified existence between the three on our planet. Andy has a well-established reputation in the international arts community, having been commissioned by major festivals across Asia, Europe, and North America, including the Singapore International Festival of the Arts (SIFA), OZAsia, Sydney Festival, and AngelicA Festival Internazionale di Musica. He has also given guest lectures, workshops, and talks at institutions such as SOAS University of London, National Gallery Singapore, and SIAM museum.

Dr Natalie Alexandra Tse (b.1987) believes in the relational nature of the Arts, to establish essential connections amongst people and their environments. For her doctoral studies at the National Institute of Education Singapore, Natalie investigated her creation of a music performance for babies, where theatrical elements transformed a space into an immersive experience for babies and parents alike. This is consistent with her artistic practice where she seeks multi-modal manners of experiencing sounds and the environment. She promotes her spirit of experimentation and exploration of sound through the Arts, with the belief that the Arts has the ability to develop children’s awareness of the diversity of cultures in the world, thereby developing understanding, respect and empathy for others. As co-founder of arts organization SAtheCollective, Natalie artistically directs the young audience initiative LittleCr3atures®, where she promotes the spirit of child-like playfulness through mindful listening.

SAtheCollective presents Kali Yuga

Film screening and kōrero

Wednesday 27 September, 6-8pm

Tākiri Te Ata (Room 3CR), Upstairs Block 1
Massey University Wellington, Pukeahu Campus

Andy Chia and Dr. Natalie Alexandra Tse, co-founders of Singaporean arts organisation SAtheCollective, brought to us a special screening of Kali Yuga (2018, 48mins). The production is part of the ETHNI-CITY project series that aims to celebrate the meeting of diverse cultures. Kali Yuga brings together musicians, movement artists, and visual artists of different cultures and background in a multidisciplinary multicultural production. Its name is inspired by Sanskrit scripture and the Mahabharata.

After the screening, Andy Chia, co-founder of SAtheCollective and director/producer of Kali Yuga, joined us (via Zoom) for a post-screening talk to share about his background, evolving interdisciplinary creative practice and their journey towards transculturalism. Facilitated by Dr. Jon He, the discussion focused on sonic whakapapa relationships between Singapore and Aotearoa and what these new possibilities could look like.
